Ergonomics can be seen as mainly about the physical aspects of the work environment – the geometry and layout of workstations, the design of manual handling tasks, the physical properties of products and so on. Whereas Human Factors encompasses higher level considerations, such as the functioning of organisational or societal structures, including cognitive concepts such as mental workload, situational awareness and stress.
Whatever name you choose, we recognise that people are at the centre of every work system. It is only by understanding the capabilities and limitations of human operators that products, systems and organisations can be designed to be efficient, productive, safe and usable.
Ours is a discipline underpinned by knowledge of anatomy, physiology, anthropometry, epidemiology, psychology, design and engineering.
Interaction of Bath is a commercial human factors consultancy, covering the breadth of the discipline. When we first began, our target was to provide user-interface design and implementation services to the electricity generation industry. Our activities are much broader now, thanks to the support of our associates.
In parallel with our journey in ergonomics, the discipline itself has expanded. The productivity, health and safety of a human operator are now also seen as influenced by the physical environment, the organisational structures and the culture of the wider society. We can provide solutions at all these levels.
This is where we are: in the centre of the World Heritage City of Bath.
Interaction of Bath was founded in 1991, incorporated as a limited company in 1994 and registered with the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors in 1997.
