Applied ethics is the examination of the issues in private and public life that are matters of moral judgment.  Most people recognize common ethical norms, but interpret, apply and balance them differently, according to their own values and life experiences.

Most societies enforce ethical standards through law.  Although ethics and law use similar concepts,  ethical norms tend to be broader and more informal than laws. An action may be legal but unethical or illegal but ethical.

The importance of applied ethics is highlighted by the 'information age'.  Urgent ethical and juridical problems arise in areas such as the right of access to information, the right to privacy (which is threatened by the free flow of information and social media) and the protection of intellectual property.

To assist in tackling problems of this type, we have developed a unique, systematic Ethical Risk Assessment process, in which challenges to ethical values and principles can be identified, classified and finally reduced to as low as reasonably practicable.

Interaction of Bath can assess the ethical impact of your project, product or process on individuals, society and the environment.  We can ensure your research adheres to the ethical norms of your profession.  Let us guide you through the complex but fascinating world of applied ethics.
